Fire Rescue Victoria Welcomes EVIE, a Cutting-Edge Zero Emissions Fire Truck, as Part of Its Modernization Efforts.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) is excited to introduce the state’s first electric fire truck to its fleet.

The Electric Vehicle for Incident and Emergency, known as EVIE, is set to arrive in Victoria later this year.

Custom-built to FRV’s specifications, EVIE integrates cutting-edge firefighting equipment and technology into a high-performance, zero-emissions vehicle.

“We’re extremely proud to introduce EVIE to Fire Rescue Victoria as part of the modernization of our vehicle fleet,” said Fire Rescue Commissioner Gavin Freeman AFSM.

“We will be thoroughly evaluating the truck’s performance to guide future decisions about incorporating electric fire appliances into our service.”

EVIE is a significant milestone for FRV and the second fully electric fire truck in Australia. It will serve as a valuable addition to the state’s firefighting fleet and facilitate the trial of this innovative technology.

Commissioner Freeman acknowledged the contributions of an expert FRV team, including representatives from the Victorian United Firefighters Union (UFU) and workshop personnel, who were involved in the vehicle’s design to maximize its benefits for firefighting crews and the Victorian community.

“We thank the project team and the UFU for their invaluable contributions,” he said.

EVIE meets all the requirements of a primary FRV pumper, boasting powerful firefighting capabilities and innovative features. These include independent drive and pump systems for ‘pump and roll’ firefighting on the move, as well as enhancements in ergonomics and storage lockers to support firefighters’ health.

Firefighters will receive thorough training and familiarization with EVIE’s new technology before the truck is gradually introduced into service, expected in early 2025.

Initially, EVIE will shadow other fire appliances during incidents to fully test its capabilities. The vehicle will undergo comprehensive evaluation before any further electric fire trucks are added to FRV’s fleet.

EVIE’s distinctive design highlights its sustainability and connection to Country, featuring artwork titled ‘Bunjil and Waa’ by Samantha Richards, a descendant of the Wurundjeri and Dja Dja Wurrung tribes through the Terrick family, on the pumper’s door.
