Watering Werribee: When History Becomes a Canvas

Rising above suburban streets, the Werribee Water Tower is no longer just a relic of the past—it’s a bold canvas that captures the spirit of a community. Built in 1914 to pump water from the Werribee River, the tower once symbolised progress. By the 1960s it had fallen silent, standing for decades as little more than concrete history.

In 2020, its story changed. Commissioned by Arts Assist, artist Hayden Dewar and assistant ShmekOne transformed the 18-metre tower into a mural titled Watering Werribee. Over 40 days and 180 litres of paint, they created a design that celebrates both heritage and habitat: on one side, the farming traditions that sustained the region; on the other, the fragile river ecosystem of platypus, frogs, and endangered birds.

Today, the tower is a landmark reborn. Located at 1 Tower Road, it’s a striking stop for visitors—perfect for photography, reflection, or pairing with a riverside walk. More than a monument, it stands as a reminder of how industry becomes art, and how a town’s past can inspire its future.
