Three local firefighters receive prestigious award for aiding critically injured woman amidst a dangerous bushfire in Bunyip

Three Werribee firefighters have been honored for their courageous actions during a 2019 bushfire, where they assisted a woman critically injured by a horse. At the Werribee Fire Brigade’s annual dinner, volunteer firefighters Daniel May, Rohan Rizzoli, and Josh Finlayson received the Unit Citation for Service from CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan.

The award recognized their quick and effective response on March 4, 2019, when they came to the aid of a woman with severe head injuries. She had been helping evacuate four horses from a property in Bunyip during a dangerous bushfire.

The Werribee firefighters were the second crew to arrive at the scene and immediately crafted a makeshift neck collar from a towel to stabilize the injured woman’s head and neck. Hearing a distress call from a nearby crew, they responded without hesitation. Upon arrival, they saw the woman lying motionless and knew the gravity of the situation, acting swiftly to use their training in a real-life emergency.

Lieutenant Rohan Rizzoli, in addition to this recognition, shared the esteemed firefighter of the year award with colleague John Lister. Darryl Wells and Michael Trifilo were joint recipients of the Pengelly award. The evening also celebrated members with five to 40 years of service, acknowledging their long-term commitment to the brigade.
