In short:
Works on a $3.2 million upgrade of the Werribee South Boat Ramp begin this week, adding a seventh launch lane, realigned pontoons and all-abilities access. The ramp is closed to the public from 3 August until the project finishes in late 2026.
Major upgrade gets underway
A major upgrade to the Werribee South Boat Ramp is set to get underway this week, promising smoother and safer water access for boaters across Melbourne’s west.
The $3.2 million project is funded by the Victorian Government and delivered in partnership with Wyndham City Council. It will lift the capacity and functionality of the boating hub, which services a large and growing community of recreational users accessing Port Phillip and Corio Bay.
What’s changing
The works will deliver a seventh boat ramp lane to increase capacity, along with the extension and realignment of existing pontoons and the addition of all-abilities access.
Council will also reconfigure the formal and informal parking areas at Werribee South to create more rigging and tie-down spaces, while improving traffic flow and easing congestion around the site.
The investment is designed to ensure the facility keeps pace with rising demand and remains a safe, accessible and reliable gateway to some of Victoria’s most popular waterways.
Ramp closed during construction
To safely complete the upgrade, the Werribee South Boat Ramp is closed to the public from 3 August 2026 for the duration of works. Boaters are directed to the closest alternative ramps at Altona, Avalon Beach and Newport in the meantime.
Work is expected to be completed in late 2026.
Part of a longer-running project
The upgrade builds on years of planning for the site. Better Boating Victoria finalised the design for the Werribee South boat ramp back in 2022, and the project was formally funded as a $2.2 million upgrade in mid-2025 before growing to its current $3.2 million scope.
It follows the recent completion of the $10.1 million K Road reconstruction in Werribee South, part of a broader run of infrastructure investment in the area.
