The Level Crossing Removal Authority announced today that the Werribee Street level crossing will be gone for good months ahead of schedule, with traffic set to flow freely and freight trains travelling over the new rail bridge by the end of summer.
Recently, 60 locally cast bridge beams were installed in less than a month to form the main structure of the new rail bridge.
Crews are now working round the clock to connect old and new track and update signalling as they prepare for trains to run on the new rail bridge.
The strong progress on this project means the crossing will be removed well ahead of our original 2022 target.
Removing the Werribee Street level crossing will improve travel and safety for the 20,000 vehicles that travel through daily.
Once the rail bridge is in operation and the level crossing is gone, they will get on with creating a new open space beneath the rail bridge for the Werribee community to enjoy.
