Wyndham's West Tarneit Station to Open Next Year

The new railway station in Melbourne’s rapidly growing western suburbs has been officially named West Tarneit. The name was selected after a public consultation process in which hundreds of people provided feedback on five proposed names. The majority of participants favored a name that was easily identifiable and linked to the local area.

The station, which is scheduled to open next year, is strategically located near the intersection of Davis and Leakes roads. It is expected to alleviate congestion at the nearby Tarneit Station, which currently caters to almost two million passengers annually.

The West Tarneit station will be equipped with a range of facilities including an accessible pedestrian underpass, 400 parking spaces, and a four-bay bus interchange. In addition, the surrounding area will feature a landscaped area with seating, separated walking and cycling paths, secure bicycle storage, and bike hoops.

The announcement of the station’s name follows the completion of preliminary site investigations. Construction is due to commence later this year.

The new station will be part of the Geelong Line, which currently has over 700 scheduled services passing through Tarneit and Wyndham Vale each week. This includes 68 new additional weekend services and 9 car VLocity trains.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Gabrielle Williams stated, “This crucial transport upgrade will deliver a brand-new West Tarneit Station for Melbourne’s growing western suburbs.” She also mentioned that the project is part of ongoing efforts to provide faster and safer journeys for passengers and motorists in the region.

Member for Tarneit, Dylan Wight, added, “West Tarneit Station will provide modern facilities, 400 new car parks and a four-bay bus interchange to make it easier for our growing community to catch public transport.” He further explained that the project includes cycling and pedestrian paths that are designed to accommodate future access to new commercial and residential developments in the area.
