West Tarneit Station has officially opened to passengers, providing a new train station for Melbourne’s rapidly growing west.
The station opened on 13 September with two accessible platforms, a 400-space car park, four-bay bus interchange, bicycle storage and a pedestrian underpass.
However, despite being a brand-new station, West Tarneit has opened without public toilets.
Both Tarneit and Wyndham Vale stations have toilet facilities, including accessible toilets, while passengers using the new West Tarneit Station will go without.
The opening also does not address one of the biggest outstanding issues facing rail services through the area, with the Wyndham Vale line remaining unelectrified and continuing to rely on V/Line trains.
There is currently no confirmed timeline for electrification of the line.
Larger nine-car VLocity trains have recently been introduced on some Wyndham Vale services, increasing capacity by up to 50 per cent during peak periods.
The State Government also used its announcement of the station opening to take aim at what it called Jess Wilson’s “Liberal-One Nation Coalition”, claiming the Opposition would cut the larger trains as part of its proposed spending cuts.
There is, however, no formal coalition between the Victorian Liberals and One Nation.
Landscaping around West Tarneit Station will continue after its opening, including the planting of more than 65,000 native trees, plants and grasses.
