A-League Club's Ambitious Project in Melbourne's West Gets Green Light with $50 Million Boost from Johnson Controls

In a major win for A-League soccer club Western United, the team has successfully secured the necessary funding for its ambitious $2 billion super-development in Melbourne’s west. The focal point of this grand venture will be a state-of-the-art 15,000-capacity stadium set to be erected in the fringe suburb of Tarneit.

Spanning across a vast 62.5-hectare site, the project will encompass a myriad of facilities, including new apartment blocks, housing subdivision lots, a hotel, commercial office space, an indoor sports arena, training and medical facilities, shops, bars, and expansive parkland. The Australian reports that Western Melbourne Group, the entity that owns Western United, clinched a crucial $50 million debt facility from the renowned New York Stock Exchange-listed building technology group, Johnson Controls. This financial injection is poised to kickstart the entire project.

In 2022, Western United Chairman Jason Sourasis highlighted the need for an additional $50 million to fully initiate the project. The latest funding, combined with a public-private partnership deal involving Wyndham Council, Melbourne developer YourLand Developments, and private investors such as Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury, tennis player Thanasi Kokkinakis, and Australian Olympic basketballers Dante Exum and Chris Goulding, has now filled that financial gap.

The Victorian state government had previously approved plans for this expansive development, a pivotal factor in Western United securing their A-League license back in 2018. Johnson Controls, boasting a track record of working on large-scale stadium developments in the United States, brings its expertise to this transformative project.

Western Melbourne Group has wasted no time and has already commenced the construction of a 5000-seat training facility at the site. This facility is expected to host home games later this year, as confirmed by Mr. Sourasis: “We will be playing in Tarneit, in the City of Wyndham, before the end of the 2023/24 A-League men’s and women’s seasons, and we look forward to our fans having a place to permanently call home,” he told The Australian. The vision of a dedicated and impressive home ground is becoming a reality for Western United and their supporters.
