Western United’s New Home in Tarneit

Tarneit sports facility

Excitement buzzes in Tarneit as the completion of the Regional Football Facility signals the imminent arrival of Western United Football Club’s home matches. With three pitches, a two-story pavilion, and capacity for 5,000 spectators, this state-of-the-art facility promises to be a hub for football enthusiasts in the region.

However, amidst the anticipation, questions linger about whether the games will attract the crowds typical of A-League matches elsewhere. Western United has faced challenges in drawing numbers to their matches in the past, raising concerns about the turnout for games at this new facility. One significant factor contributing to this concern for Tarneit is the lack of public transport options to the facility, which can pose logistical challenges for fans trying to attend matches.

Mayor of Wyndham City, Councillor Jennie Barrera, expressed her delight at reaching this milestone in the A-League Stadium Project partnership with Western Melbourne Group (WMG). The next phase, spearheaded by WMG, aims to deliver a purpose-built 15,000-capacity soccer stadium and an 800-lot residential community, with major project partners YourLand Developments and Johnson Controls onboard.

“It’s been a long time coming, and we are thrilled to welcome Western United to its rightful home in Tarneit,” said Mayor Barrera. “This facility represents a significant milestone for our community, especially our football-loving residents.”

The naming of the Regional Football Facility Reserve and Pavilion is also a matter of contention. With options like Davis and Ironbark on the table, the community is engaged in a voting process to determine the official names. The chosen name will soon be endorsed, adding another layer of identity to this burgeoning football hub.

Jason Sourasis, Chairman of Western United, emphasized the significance of this moment for the club. “It allows us to move into our permanent home, playing out of only the second rectangular stadium in Victoria approved for A-League Men and Women games,” he stated. “Our growth will be underpinned by a community and fan-first philosophy as we entrench our club into the Wyndham community.”

Coaches Kat Smith and John Aloisi echoed Sourasis’s sentiments, expressing their eagerness to kick off matches at the new venue and engage with the local community.

As preparations ramp up for the opening matches, Western United and Wyndham City Council promise to keep fans updated on matchdays, events, and ticketing information. The countdown to the inaugural games at the Regional Football Facility in Tarneit has begun, marking a new era for football in the West.
