Over 10,000 Wyndham homes lost power after a fault this morning. Most services have now been restored, though a van rolled during the outage at a Point Cook intersection.

Wyndham suburbs hit by sudden power fault

More than 10,000 homes and businesses across Wyndham lost power earlier today after a major fault occurred on the electricity network just before 11.30am.

The outage affected large parts of Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina and Point Cook, causing disruptions to traffic signals and forcing some businesses to temporarily close.

A spokeswoman for Powercor said, “Just before 11.30am today, a fault occurred on the electricity network that impacted power to just over 10,000 customers in Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and surrounding suburbs.”

Crews worked throughout the afternoon to restore electricity, and most areas have now had power and traffic lights restored, with just under 1,000 customers still waiting to be reconnected.

“We are now working to restore supply to the remaining 998 customers,” the Powercor spokeswoman said.

“Our crews have found some damaged equipment and are conducting repairs, but we are still investigating the main cause of the fault. We will continue keeping customers updated on restoration times via our website, SMS and our contact centre. We thank everyone for their patience as our crews work safely to get power back on.”

While power has returned for the majority, some Point Cook Town Centre retailers — particularly in the Coles and Woolworths quadrants — were forced to close earlier in the day.

One local, desperate for some fast food, said they arrived at Point Cook KFC only to find it closed due to the blackout. The customer then drove across three other outlets in Wyndham — all impacted by the outage — before giving up and heading home empty-handed.

One of the more serious incidents occurred at the height of the outage when a van rolled onto its side at the intersection of Dunnings Road and Boardwalk Boulevard in Point Cook, where the traffic lights were not working.

The van collided with another vehicle, flipping onto its side. Locals rushed to help the driver and those in the second car before police arrived. Emergency services were quickly on scene, and no major injuries were reported.

The crash highlighted the risks posed by traffic signal failures during large-scale outages.

With power now restored to most affected areas, residents are being advised to remain cautious on the roads and visit the Powercor website for the latest updates.
