Swift Action by Police and Rescue Squads Saves Lives in Dramatic River Rescue
A woman and her beloved canine companion narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation after being saved from the swift currents of the Werribee River yesterday.
On Tuesday, December 26, around 1:30 pm, the police received a distress call reporting that the woman, who had ventured into the river to rescue her four-legged friend, was swept away.
A vigilant passerby raised the alarm upon spotting the woman clinging to a tree in the fast-flowing waters. According to reports, the woman lost her footing near Redgum Close, Werribee, and was carried approximately 20 metres downstream as she attempted to retrieve her dog, Minka, who had ventured into deep water.
In response, the Search and Rescue Squad collaborated with Water Police, receiving support from local police and State Emergency Service personnel. Members from both the Water Police and Search and Rescue Squad bravely entered the rapid waters to execute a successful swift water rescue, pulling Minka and her 29-year-old owner to safety on the riverbank.
Following the rescue, both the woman and her canine companion were examined and, fortunately, were not found to have sustained serious injuries.
The police express their gratitude to the vigilant member of the public who promptly called for emergency service assistance.
