WorkSafe Campaign Targets Farm Risks

Farm safety

In short:

A new WorkSafe campaign is urging Victorian farmers, including growers in Werribee South, to improve farm safety as agriculture remains over-represented in workplace deaths. Farm vehicles and livestock incidents continue to account for the majority of fatalities across the state.

Local Farmers Urged to Stay Safe

Agriculture remains one of Victoria’s most dangerous industries, with new data showing farm workers account for around 10 per cent of workplace deaths despite making up just two per cent of the state’s workforce.

A $2.8 million WorkSafe campaign is now rolling out across television, radio, print, outdoor, digital and social media, urging farmers to review safety practices and make practical improvements on their properties.

Deputy Premier Ben Carroll launches the Safety – it does more than keep you safe campaign, which features Victorian farmers sharing their experiences and outlining changes they have made to reduce risks.

Fifth-generation farmer Rob Abbott, who runs Mount William Station at Willaura, says upgrading his cattle yards has changed the way he operates.

After the improvements, he finds processing cattle is safer, quicker and less stressful for animals.

Farm vehicles including tractors, quad bikes and trucks account for almost half of farm-related workplace deaths, while livestock incidents remain another leading cause.

In Wyndham, farming remains a major part of the local economy, particularly in Werribee South where market gardens supply fresh produce across Melbourne.

Local growers rely heavily on machinery, transport vehicles and seasonal labour — all areas where safety risks can arise if controls are not in place.

WorkSafe says it provides practical guidance to help farmers identify hazards and make changes that reduce the likelihood of serious injury or death.

Farmers are encouraged to review their systems, speak with others in the industry and consider improvements that may also improve efficiency and productivity.
