Wyndham City's LIT Festival Receives National Award for Creativity and Culture in 2024

Wyndham City’s annual lighting festival, LIT, has been awarded the prestigious Creativity and Culture Award at the National Awards for Local Government. This event, held in Werribee, which attracts thousands of visitors each year, was recognized for its innovative and impactful initiatives that showcase the best of the community through arts and culture.

LIT, now in its third year, saw a record-breaking 75,000 attendees at Wyndham Park in March. This year’s festival featured 14 glowing evenings, including a special Sensory Friendly evening that catered to visitors with sensory sensitivities and other needs.

Among the highlights of the festival were Amigo & Amigo’s ChronoHarp, where visitors could create gentle harp melodies on a giant illuminated instrument, and Trumpet Flowers, a stunning display of giant flowers that lit up and played music at the press of a button.

Wyndham City Mayor Jennie Barrera, who accepted the award at the ceremony, expressed her excitement at LIT’s national recognition. She stated, “For the past three years, LIT has consistently presented a free program of carefully curated and stunning light installations. I am incredibly proud to see this fantastic event get the recognition it deserves.”

She also congratulated and thanked the Council staff, artists, and others who work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring LIT to life each year. The Mayor also noted that two other Wyndham City events, Firefly Night Market and Mooroop Yarkeen by Tommy Day / Jirri Jirri, were recognized as finalists at the awards.

Mayor Barrera added, “To have three of Wyndham City’s major initiatives acknowledged at these national awards is a testament to the high quality of events and activations that attract visitors from both within Wyndham and the wider Melbourne area.”

This award comes almost a year after LIT was named a national finalist in the 2023 Australian Event Awards. LIT continues to grow and evolve, solidifying its place as one of Wyndham City’s most beloved and successful events.
