Wyndham Demands Bus Shelters

No bus shelters

In short:

Wyndham Council has called on the Victorian Government to install bus shelters across the municipality as new routes and stops continue to roll out. Residents in Melbourne’s west are still waiting in extreme heat and heavy rain without basic protection.

New Stops, No Shelter

Thousands of Wyndham residents are waiting for buses without shelter — and Council has now formally backed a push to call on the State Government to fix it.

At the 24 February 2026 Council Meeting, councillors supported a notice of motion from Cr Jasmine Hill seeking a strategic report into the lack of bus shelters across the municipality and stronger advocacy to the Victorian Government.

The motion acknowledges Wyndham’s rapid population growth and the heavy reliance on buses to connect residents to train stations, schools, jobs and community facilities. It also notes that many bus stops across Wyndham lack shelter and adequate weather protection.

The State Government has heavily promoted new bus routes and additional stops across Wyndham in recent years. Services have expanded and new connections have been rolled out across growth corridors.

But while routes and poles have appeared, a critical part of the infrastructure has often been missing — the shelter itself.

In practical terms, that means people standing in direct sun during heatwaves, exposed during winter rain, or waiting in the dark without basic cover.

Wyndham is a municipality where temperatures can climb past 40 degrees in summer and shift to heavy rain and strong winds in winter.

For vulnerable members of the community — including students, seniors, parents with prams and residents with mobility challenges — the lack of protection from the elements is more than an inconvenience. It becomes a safety issue.

The motion recognises bus shelter infrastructure is primarily the responsibility of the Victorian Government through Public Transport Victoria. Council’s role is to identify where shelters are missing and formally advocate for installation.

Officers have been directed to prepare a report within three months identifying bus stop locations without shelter, developing a prioritisation framework based on accessibility, safety, connectivity and equity, and providing a ranked list to strengthen Council’s case to the State Government.

The Chief Executive Officer will also formally write to Public Transport Victoria and the Victorian Minister for Public and Active Transport calling for the timely installation of bus shelters at priority locations across Wyndham.

For one of Victoria’s fastest-growing municipalities, the issue is basic: in many streets across Wyndham, residents are still waiting for buses without a roof over their heads.

Council has now formally put the pressure on the State Government. The next test will be whether it responds.
