According to the data, theft-related offences were the most common, with stealing from a motor vehicle, other theft, and motor vehicle theft ranking as the top three subgroups. The number of incidents related to stealing from motor vehicles increased from 2143 to 2573, while other theft saw a significant jump from 1951 to 2186. Motor vehicle theft also saw a sharp increase, rising from 816 to 1093.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations Chris Gilbert addressed the statewide increase in theft-related offences, stating, “Victoria’s four fastest growing crimes are all related to opportunistic offending – theft from motor vehicles, retail theft, motor vehicle theft, and the theft of other items such as petrol.” He also urged the community to take simple measures, such as locking doors and windows, to prevent burglaries and car thefts.
In total, there were 552,228 criminal offences recorded in Victoria in the 12 months leading up to June 2024, an increase of 9.1% from the previous year.
