Wyndham’s population, housing and spending growth could position the region to benefit from investment in several major industries. Commonwealth Bank Chief Economist Luke Yeaman says Australia’s economy is slowing but is not heading towards recession.
Region Loaded With Business Potential
Wyndham’s rapid population growth could put the region in a strong position to benefit from investment in several major industries despite a slowing Australian economy.
Commonwealth Bank Chief Economist Luke Yeaman shared his outlook for the economy at the Committee for Wyndham’s Annual Economic Update Lunch in Werribee South on 13 August.
Speaking to representatives from around 90 local businesses, Mr Yeaman said that while the Australian economy was slowing, it was not heading towards recession.
Investment in technology, data centres, defence, renewable energy, infrastructure and construction was continuing to support economic activity.

AI, Logistics And Healthcare Among Rising Industries
CBA’s current outlook is that further interest rate rises are unlikely to be required in 2026, with the next movement expected to be down. However, rate cuts are not anticipated until 2027.
Artificial intelligence was also a major focus, with Mr Yeaman highlighting growing investment in data centres and the potential for AI to improve productivity and transform business practices over the next three to five years.
Mr Yeaman pointed to Wyndham’s population growth, consumer spending and housing activity as factors distinguishing the municipality from broader Melbourne.
Transport and logistics, healthcare, AI and data centres, electricity infrastructure, electric vehicle infrastructure and education were identified as areas where Wyndham and Melbourne’s west could benefit from future investment and growth.

Population Growth Could Be Ultimate Gift
Committee for Wyndham CEO Leanne Down said the region now faced the challenge of turning its population growth into greater economic opportunities.
“What was particularly encouraging was Luke’s assessment that despite some challenging economic conditions nationally, Wyndham continues to have significant opportunities ahead of it.
“Our challenge is to make sure our extraordinary population growth translates into local jobs, investment and economic opportunity, and that Wyndham is positioned to benefit from the industries that will drive Australia’s next phase of growth.”
The 2026 event marked the 15th year of the Committee for Wyndham’s Annual Economic Update Lunch.
