A Wyndham Vale man has become an overnight multi-millionaire after winning $50 million in Thursday’s Powerball draw while watching the AFL on television with his son.
The local father held the only division one winning entry nationally in Powerball draw 1556 on 12 March 2026, claiming the entire $50 million prize.
The man only realised he had won after receiving an email about his ticket and checking the result on the lottery app.
“Is it true?” he said when speaking after discovering the win.
“I actually saw your first email and I didn’t even open it. I assumed it was junk and deleted it.
“But then I received another email, and I thought, ‘maybe I’ll check the app’.
“Unbelievable! Fifty million dollars! That’s insane!
“I’m in shock! I’m just sitting here watching the footy with my son.”
The winner said the ticket was a small entry costing $6.30.
He said he usually plays using birthday numbers but decided to pick random numbers for this draw, including selecting number 14 as the Powerball because it is his favourite football number.
The Wyndham Vale resident said the win would allow his family to finally buy their own home after renting for years and he hoped to help his children get into homes of their own in the future.
He also said he would like to use some of the money to help others in the community.
Victoria has recorded three of the four Powerball division one wins so far in 2026.
