Get Published and Develop Skills in Free Workshops
The Wyndham Writing Awards are now accepting entries, offering aspiring writers a chance to win cash prizes and have their work published in the Wyndham Writing Awards Anthology. The awards are designed to inspire, encourage, and recognise emerging adult writers and literary creators from Victoria, aged 18 and above.
Wyndham City’s Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw, expressed her enthusiasm for the awards, stating, “We have many emerging writers in our City and others whose talents are yet to be recognised.” She added, “These awards offer the opportunity for new and unseasoned writers to challenge themselves, develop and grow their skills.”
The competition includes three categories for unpublished works: short stories (between 1,500 and 3,000 words), flash fiction (between 100 and 600 words), and poetry (maximum 60 lines). The awards will be judged by writer Katherine Kovacic, with a total cash prize pool of $3,600.
Each category offers a cash prize for an overall winner and a second cash prize for a Wyndham Local Encouragement Award, funded by Wyndham City Arts. All shortlisted entries will be published in the Wyndham Writing Awards Anthology 2025.
Cr Shaw encouraged potential entrants, saying, “Be inspired – explore your creative side and start writing and this maybe the beginning of a wonderful literary career.”
In preparation for the awards, Wyndham City Libraries are offering free workshops for adult writers of all experience levels. These workshops aim to inspire and develop writing skills in a fun and friendly environment. The workshops include Flash Fiction with Michelle Wright at the Hoppers Crossing Library on 14 May, Short Story with Amra Pajalic online on 22 May, and Poetry with Dr Chris Ringrose at Point Cook Library on 28 May. All workshops run from 6.30pm to 8.30pm and require bookings.
The Wyndham Writing Awards will be accepting entries until Sunday 30 June. For more information and to enter the awards, visit www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/writingawards.
