Wyndham’s Crime Numbers Climb

Crime in Wyndham

In short:

Crime across Wyndham has increased in 2025, with theft, retail offences and motor vehicle crime driving growth in suburbs including Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing. While overall incidents rose, some areas like Werribee and Point Cook recorded declines.

Werribee Records Highest Criminal Incidents

Crime recorded across Wyndham rose in 2025, with total criminal incidents increasing from 17,761 in 2024 to 18,823 in 2025, a rise of 6.0 per cent. Alleged offender incidents also increased, climbing from 5,912 to 6,622, up 12.0 per cent over the same period.

By suburb, Werribee recorded the highest number of criminal incidents in Wyndham with 4,114, followed by Tarneit with 3,562, Hoppers Crossing with 3,095, Point Cook with 2,432, and Truganina with 1,758.

Of those top five suburbs, three recorded clear increases. Tarneit rose by 520 incidents, up 17.1 per cent from 3,042 to 3,562. Hoppers Crossing increased by 339 incidents, up 12.3 per cent from 2,756 to 3,095. Truganina rose by 219 incidents, up 14.2 per cent from 1,539 to 1,758. Werribee, despite remaining the municipality’s highest-crime suburb by volume, fell by 356 incidents, down 8.0 per cent from 4,470. Point Cook also recorded a decline, dropping by 111 incidents, down 4.4 per cent from 2,543.

Theft Dominates Wyndham’s Crime Rates

Burglary and break and enter offences increased by 110 to 2,008. Breaches of orders rose by 118 to 1,442. Deception offences increased by 74 to 710. Sexual offences rose by 27 to 326. At offence subgroup level, the largest increases were concentrated in acquisitive crime. Other theft increased by 392 incidents to 2,744. Steal from a retail store rose by 321 to 1,359. Motor vehicle theft increased by 222 to 1,267. Obtain benefit by deception rose by 69 to 611. Steal from a motor vehicle, already the largest single subgroup in Wyndham, climbed again to 3,282, up 18 incidents on the previous year.

A Huge Increase in Shopping Centre Crime

The location data points to where that pressure is building. Incidents on streets, lanes and footpaths increased by 289 to 2,937. Shopping complexes rose by 230 to 847. Front yards increased by 150 to 623. Other retail locations rose by 106 to 735. Train stations increased by 101 to 446. Supermarkets were up by 81 to 450, service stations rose by 65 to 559, and single-level carparks increased by 55 to 650.

There was, however, one notable counterweight in the figures. Houses remained the most common location type for criminal incidents in Wyndham at 5,316, but that number actually fell by 156 from 5,472 the year before. Werribee also recorded a year-on-year decline even while remaining the highest-volume suburb in the municipality.

Highest Number of Offenders are 12 to 17 Year Olds

The alleged offender data adds another layer to the picture. Theft was the leading principal offence subdivision for alleged offender incidents in Wyndham in 2025 with 1,701 incidents, followed by assault and related offences with 1,481, breaches of orders with 863, burglary and break and enter with 521, and property damage with 366. Males accounted for 5,316 alleged offender incidents, compared with 1,305 involving females. By age, the highest counts were recorded among 12 to 17-year-olds with 1,105, followed closely by 30 to 34-year-olds with 1,065 and 18 to 24-year-olds with 1,058.

Taken together, the numbers show a municipality where crime growth in 2025 was not evenly spread. The strongest increases were concentrated in Tarneit, Hoppers Crossing and Truganina, and were driven heavily by theft, retail offending, motor vehicle crime and incidents occurring in public and commercial spaces
