In a move necessitated by ongoing structural concerns at Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre in Hoppers Crossing, Village Cinemas in Wyndham is set to temporarily close its doors from February until the middle of the year.
The intertwined fate of the cinema and the shopping centre underscores the structural challenges faced by Pacific Werribee, a well-known issue in the community. The closure of Village Cinemas aligns with the broader efforts to address and rectify these structural concerns, reflecting a proactive approach to ensuring the safety and longevity of the shopping centre.
This closure leaves the local community without a cinema option during the specified period, prompting movie enthusiasts to seek alternative entertainment options in neighbouring regions. While residents acknowledge the inconvenience, some view the hiatus as an opportunity for necessary improvements at the ageing cinema.

Social media platforms have become channels for community sentiments, with residents expressing concerns and suggestions. Notably, one resident urged, “If you’re closing the movies, can you please replace the disgusting chairs, they stink!” Another resident is optimistic that this temporary closure will prompt Village Cinemas to enhance their offerings, drawing a comparison to the superior amenities at Reading Cinemas.

And still another stating, “I hope this forces village to improve their product. Once people realise Readings cinemas are a million times better (cheaper, reclining seats & cleaner) – I doubt many will go back to Village.”
Simultaneously, Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre is undergoing a significant transformation to address its structural issues. The completion of the first stage of works by the end of 2023 paved the way for Stage Two, concentrated primarily on the Myer end of the centre. These renovations, ongoing since January 2024 and expected to conclude before Christmas 2024, require the temporary closure or relocation of several stores.
Affected retailers include H&M, Just Jeans, Jay Jays, Sportsgirl, Dotti, Black Art, Peter Jackson, Mecca, Mocha, T2, Pandora, Melbourne Jewellers, General Pants, Timezone, and Martini & Co, with plans to reopen in the middle of the year.
Some retailers will operate from alternative tenancies to minimise disruptions during this period. Mecca, Seed, Peter Jackson, and Pandora are among those ensuring continued accessibility to their products and services despite the ongoing renovations.
As the Wyndham community navigates these interconnected changes, questions remain about the future of local entertainment and retail experiences. The temporary closure of Village Cinemas, intertwined with the structural renovations at Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre, raises anticipation for an improved and revitalized local hub once the works are complete.
