Many Of The Best Coming West

Melbourne’s west is preparing for a major month of chess, with two Victorian championship events bringing female players and hundreds of juniors to Altona and Bacchus Marsh.

The Victorian Women’s Chess Championship will be held at Hobsons Bay Chess Club in Altona across 12 and 19 September.

Female players from across Victoria will compete in the FIDE and ACF-rated tournament, with a $1,500 prize pool on offer.

The championship will also include junior age-group prizes aimed at encouraging younger female players to compete, while selected games will be broadcast live online.

Attention then turns to Bacchus Marsh in October, where hundreds of young players and their families are expected for the Victorian Junior Rapid & Blitz Championships.

The championships will be held at Bacchus Marsh Grammar’s Maddingley Campus on 3 and 4 October, attracting competitors from metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

High-Octane Matches Expected

Young players will compete for Victorian titles across Open and Girls categories from Under 8 through to Under 18.

The Rapid Championship will feature nine rounds, with players given 13 minutes plus two seconds per move.

Things get even quicker in the nine-round Blitz Championship, where players have just three minutes plus two seconds per move, putting their decision-making and clock management to the test.

Both junior championships will be officially rated, including FIDE ratings, with selected games played on electronic chess boards and broadcast live online.

The two events are being organised with the involvement of Hobsons Bay Chess Club as competitive chess continues to build its presence across Melbourne’s western suburbs.
