In short:
Cr. Preet Singh has been elected Wyndham Mayor and Cr. Hill Deputy Mayor after securing majority votes on 23 March. The result ends a previous deadlock and establishes new council leadership.
Wyndham City Council has elected Cr. Preet Singh as Mayor and Cr. Hill as Deputy Mayor at a meeting on 23 March, bringing an end to a prolonged leadership deadlock.
Chief Executive Officer Stephen Wall opened the meeting following last week’s tied vote, which left councillors unable to reach a majority decision.
Cr. McGuire nominated Cr. Preet Singh for Mayor, with Cr. Shaw seconding the nomination. Cr. Szatkowski again nominated Cr. Peter Maynard, seconded by Cr. McIntyre.
Councillors then voted, with Cr. Preet Singh securing the mayoralty with a majority of six votes — breaking the previous 5–5 split.

Attention then turned to the Deputy Mayor position. Cr. Maynard nominated Cr. Szatkowski, seconded by Cr. McIntyre, while Cr. King nominated Cr. Hill, seconded by Cr. McGuire.
Cr. Hill was elected Deputy Mayor with six votes.
The outcome marks a clear shift from the evenly divided chamber seen at the previous meeting, where councillors failed to reach an absolute majority even after an adjournment and repeat vote.
The earlier deadlock followed weeks of political instability triggered by the suspension of the former Mayor after a misconduct ruling, which reopened the mayoral race and intensified divisions within council.
Tonight’s result suggests a consolidation of support behind Cr. Singh and Cr. Hill, delivering a defined leadership team after a period of uncertainty and heightened public scrutiny.
The newly elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor now take on their roles at a time where expectations around stability, cohesion and clear direction within council remain high.
