Mia Shaw Back in the Saddle Until November
Mia Shaw has been elected as Wyndham’s third mayor in five months at a special council meeting held on Thursday evening.
Following the resignation of Cr Preet Singh as mayor on 21 July, councillors gathered for the unscheduled meeting to elect a new mayor.
Cr Shaw, who previously served as mayor in 2018–19 and 2024–25, reclaimed the robes after defeating Cr Peter Maynard in a 6–4 vote.
Councillors Josh Gilligan, Shannon McGuire, Maria King, Preet Singh, Jasmine Hill and Shaw voted in favour of Cr Shaw, while councillors Susan McIntyre, Robert Szatkowski, Larry Zhao and Peter Maynard backed Cr Maynard.
Cr Jasmine Hill will remain deputy mayor until the next scheduled mayoral election in November.
The new leadership will now look to steady the ship after a tumultuous period for Wyndham City Council.
The first mayoral election in the current council term was held on 12 November 2025, when councillors elected Cr Josh Gilligan as mayor and Cr Preet Singh as deputy mayor.
Cr Gilligan was suspended from office on 25 February after an independent arbiter found he had engaged in misconduct relating to a Facebook exchange with former mayor and current Heathdale by-election candidate Kim McAliney.
A second mayoral election was held on 18 March to elect a replacement, but two rounds of voting ended in a 5–5 deadlock between Cr Peter Maynard and Cr Singh.
The deadlock was broken at a meeting on 23 March when Cr Jasmine Hill changed her vote, resulting in Cr Singh being elected mayor and Cr Hill being elected deputy mayor.
A week later, Cr Singh become subject to public furore when it was revealed he had written a character reference for a child sex offender prior to his election to council.
